Online music lessons are a way for people to learn music over the internet, with their own in-person private music instructor, in the comfort of their own space. It works well for those who:
When first asked to offer online piano lessons we thought it would be difficult for the student and the instructor. But it turned out to be an easy and effective way to connect for all private music lessons from Charleston SC. Prior to our first lesson together we will schedule a complementary mini session for you so we can determine how best to set up your internet device and lesson space. That way we can start to learn to play piano during your first session.
Here are some things to know:
Click on the lesson link for your session time within 5 minutes of your scheduled time. Be prepared with your instrument, and any other lesson supplies. When the student before you has finished, Dolly will let you into the online studio. It's that easy. For the lesson proper you will need:
Other needed print-outs and supportive materials will be available to you through the Student Resources tab on this site. Students will need to create an account to access the materials on that page. You can create your account on the Student Resources page.
How do I get lesson books and materials? During your initial lesson Dolly will assess your abilities and let you know which books she recommends. You can order your books from an online source yourself, or you can purchase them through this studio and I will mail them to you.
How does payment work? You will be invoiced for your lessons near the end of each month for the upcoming month through Square. Payment is collected before lessons are given. You will be able to pay the invoice with a credit card before the first of each month.
If there are five lessons in a month you can choose to take a lesson week off without being charged for that 5th lesson. However, you need to let us know the week you want off prior to the start of the 5-week month. All other lesson times are charged, whether or not you can attend. You must remember that in addition to purchasing quality instruction, you are also buying a space of time. If you miss a lesson time you will not be refunded or credited for that time. If you forget to show up for two consecutive lesson times you may be removed from the teaching schedule.
Will this work for my child? Studying music requires initiative, good listening and communication skills, and self-motivation. The student has to come to the discipline with a true interest in learning. A tennis player will never improve if she only practices for 5 minutes one day a week outside of her tennis lesson. The same is true for music. The more time you put into music practice, the faster you will see personal improvement. The parent should be present while children are having their online lesson and help the child select a regular time to practice every day. Twenty minutes a day is a good start with a goal of 45 minutes per day as the student moves forward. The 45 minute session can be broken into two sessions. Suggested practice times include one session after breakfast and one later in the day, usually following an after school snack, or supper.
Are you still available for in-person lessons if I live in, or am visiting, the Charleston SC area? That's a very good question and the answer is a definite YES! Dolly has always taught, and coached, in-person. However, until our COVID-19 numbers go down in Charleston SC (we are currently a hot-spot) she will only be giving online lessons. We are doing our best to keep students and their loved ones safe.
Do you have a lightly used method book you no longer need? An old guitar you can donate or a keyboard you have outgrown?
When family budgets get small, music is often the first to be forgotten. Reach out if you need lesson or music material support.
